This week's transcription is of the first episode of an anime called "Encouragement of Climb" (ヤマノススメ).  You can watch the episode here whilst following the transcript.  Anime is particularly useful for those wishing to learn colloquial language and, as usual, certain phrases have been picked out for review at the end of this post.

Here are some useful phrases from this week's transcript:

それで sore de - and so
それに sore ni - in addition
数時間 suujikan - a few hours
ますます masumasu - gradually (polite)
普段 fudan - usually (I tend to)
相変わらず - as always
一歩一歩 - one step at a time

Transcript #2: Interview with Hiromi Uehara

Here's our transcription of an interview with jazz composer and pianist, Hiromi Uehara.  Please watch the video whilst following the transcript.  

多分毎日本当に大好きなピアノと戯れられて本当に楽しいです。それで、あの、もともとその自分がピアノっていう楽器にすごく魅せられて、今回このソロピアノのアルバムを作ることになって、このツアーが決まったんですけど、こう毎日その自分で一人でソロのライブっていうものを数時間毎日続けるなかでますますピアノの魅力に取り憑かれていくというか、どんどんそのピアノの可能性だったり、あこういう魅力がまだ隠れてたんだな、こういうところがまだわかってなかったなとか。本当毎日ピアノにいろんなこと教えられていくというツアーです。

It's wonderful to be able to play this piano that I love so much everyday.  I've always been fascinated by the instrument and this time, with the solo album and tour, playing alone a few hours everyday I've become possessed by the piano's charm, gradually discovering new possibilities.  Everyday of this tour I am learning more about the piano.

今回一番大きいのが、その生音でやっていてそのPAというものを通していないので普段そのライブに行って、こう聞こえてくると、こう受け身で聞くのではなくて自分から音を探しに行く、こう耳がそれを聞きに行くっていう状態なのです。すごく皆さんも集中力を使うと思うんですね。だから多分終わったら私もそうだけど客さんもすごく疲れるんじゃないかなって、それがいい意味での疲れであってくれたら幸せだなと思ってます。すごくやりがいがあるし、そのお客さんとこうピアノと一緒に音楽を作ってる感じがします。

The biggest difference this time is that we didn't use a PA, meaning that unlike a normal concert where the sound reaches one's ears regardless, you need to listen more carefully; everybody is really having to concentrate hard.  So, after the concert, the audience is equally as tired as me and it makes me happy to think they'd endure this for my music.  It's rewarding to have the feeling of making music together with the audience.

一番大きい違いはそこに聞いてくださる方がいらっしゃって一緒に作って行くということですね。その、レコーディングっていうのは自分の中にある思いを吹き込んでそれをお客さんが、汲み取ってくださるんけど、ライブっていうのはその場でお客さんがどう感じているか、でそれに対して自分がどう伝えたいかっていうことか、ずっとひっきりなしに続いて行くんで、そこの面白さっていうのがとても大きいです、本当に。

The biggest difference is the feeling of the audience coming to hear and create music together with me.  The audience interpret the thoughts that I'd laid down in the recording and this ongoing question of what they're feeling and what I'd wanted to convey is very interesting. 

ライブ三昧でした。相変わらずの。でも本当にソロピアノっていうプロジェクト始めて、ピアノと一対一で向かい合うことですごく自分がこう、本当にピアノを始めた時の気持ちに戻れたので、どうしてピアノなのかとか、どうしてピアノっていう楽器がこれだけ好きなのかっていうことをやっぱり再認識した年でした。

I was completely absorbed in live shows, as always.  But when I started this solo piano project, I sat facing the piano, returned to how I'd felt when I first began playing and asked “why the piano?  Why do I only like this instrument?” It's really been a year to reaffirm my love for the instrument.

本当に毎年毎年新しいことにどんどんチャレンジして、自分がちゃんとこう一歩一歩成長感じられるようにコツコツ頑張りたいです。

I want to do my best, facing new challenges every year to improve one step at a time.

本当にピアノっていう楽器がこんなに色々な音が出て、本当にとにかくピアノの楽しさがこう皆に伝わったらいいなと思うので、本当に、なんだろ、ピアノっていうこう乗り物に乗りにくいような感覚で楽しみにきていただけたら嬉しいなと思います。 

I'd like everybody to feel the wonder of this instrument that is able to create so many sounds and to come and enjoy the sense of a journey with the piano.
